No kitchen? No problem! Here's how you can "survive" in college without a kitchen.
Lets take a stroll down memory lane to my freshman year of college. Without a doubt, one of the best years of my life. I lived in an amazing dorm, had awesome friends, and was just enjoying life. However one thing that was very prominent was the lack of "real" food. Sure we had chips, crackers, cookies and of course ramen. However, none of that is too kind to your body. Luckily after a month in our dorm, we came up with some ways to survive without having a kitchen. Of course we had the dining hall all the way across campus, but became bored of the usual offerings.
In my freshman dorm we actually were not allowed to have a microwave in our dorm rooms. We had to share one with everyone downstairs. Needless to say it was usually dirty, had a long wait line, or was broken. Therefore we snuck a microwave into our room (hehe) and hid it in our closet. My freshman dorm room was a suite (you can watch a dorm room tour if it here if you are interested.) So we had our individual closets, and then a shared suite closet. We kept the microwave in the shared suite closet, and then would pull it into one of our rooms to use it. Luckily it was very small (like this one.)
Thankfully most colleges allow students to have microwaves. So hopefully you will not have to sneak one into your dorm. However here are some other kitchen devices that you can use. None of these were officially on our dorm "ban" list but we still kept them hidden.
1.) Sandwich Maker - You can make some delicious paninis or transform your PB&J into a toasty delight!
2.) Personal Blender - Smoothies anyone?! Or margaritas ;) I love having a blender. It allows you to make delicious smoothies and enjoy them in class. We actually didn't have a blender, instead we had a mini food processor. However I would definitely recommend a blender over that. I love the one pictured above because it's pink, and you can just take the bottle with you and go.
3.) Oscar 12" Electric Skillet - This we did not have, however I wish we did. You can make some stir fry or pancakes, the options are endless!
4.) George Foreman Grill - Mostly known as the beloved "George." The guys that lived in the dorm next to us had one of these. One night on a snow day they decided to make Italian marinated chicken. The smell completely filled the hall and everyone was knocking on their door for a bite.
I of course would recommend a microwave and/or a hot pot. I just didn't add those because I was hoping your dorm would at least let you have access to a microwave.
What did you use in your dorm when you didn't have a kitchen? Share your comments and any recipes in the comments.
